Authorities are investigating the death of a man who lost consciousness while being subdued by police officers on Long Island, New York. The incident occurred on Thursday, August 1, 2024, in Wyandanch, Suffolk County.
According to a statement from the Suffolk County Police Department, officers responded to a 911 call about a possibly intoxicated man lying on the ground shortly before 10:30 a.m. Upon arrival, they encountered a man who was reportedly “acting agitated and banging on a business window while naked from the waist down.”
As officers attempted to restrain and handcuff the individual, he became unresponsive. Emergency measures were immediately initiated, with officers and rescue workers performing CPR at the scene. The man was then transported to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
The identity of the deceased has not been released pending notification of next of kin.
The New York State Attorney General’s Office, which is mandated to investigate all deaths involving police officers, was notified and responded to the scene. This is in accordance with Executive Order No. 147, signed by Governor Andrew Cuomo in 2015, which appoints the Attorney General as a special prosecutor in matters relating to the deaths of unarmed civilians caused by law enforcement officers.
Suffolk County Police have stated that their Homicide Squad and Internal Affairs Bureau are also conducting separate investigations into the incident.
This case has raised concerns among local community members and civil rights advocates. Tracey Edwards, Long Island Regional Director of the NAACP, told PIX11 News, “We are closely monitoring the situation and call for a thorough, transparent investigation into the circumstances surrounding this tragic death.”
The incident occurs against a backdrop of ongoing national discussions about police use of force and in-custody deaths. According to a 2023 report from the Bureau of Justice Statistics, there were 1,239 arrest-related deaths nationwide in 2022, highlighting the importance of continued scrutiny and reform in law enforcement practices.
As the investigation unfolds, local officials have called for patience and cooperation from the community. Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone stated in a press release, “We are committed to a full and impartial investigation into this matter. Our thoughts are with the family of the deceased during this difficult time.”
The Suffolk County Police Department has not released any additional details about the officers involved or the specific circumstances leading to the man’s loss of consciousness. A department spokesperson stated that further information would be made available as the investigation progresses.
This incident serves as a reminder of the complex challenges facing law enforcement and communities nationwide, as efforts continue to balance public safety with the protection of individual rights and the prevention of in-custody fatalities.
