Elon Musk and Donald Trump Unite Under Shared Legal Representation

In an unexpected turn of events, tech mogul Elon Musk and former President Donald Trump have found themselves sharing legal representation through the Dhillon Law Group, a boutique firm established by conservative attorney Harmeet Dhillon[1].

The firm is currently spearheading a lawsuit filed by X Corp., formerly known as Twitter Inc., against a coalition of advertisers boycotting Musk’s platform. Simultaneously, Dhillon’s firm serves as the primary external legal counsel for Trump’s presidential campaign[1].

This legal connection comes amid growing public alignment between Musk and Trump. Recently, Musk expressed support for Trump’s presidential aspirations, and Trump announced plans for a significant interview on X[1].

The lawsuit initiated by X Corp. targets the World Federation of Advertisers, which is associated with the nonprofit Global Alliance for Responsible Media (GARM). Musk alleges that this group orchestrated an advertising boycott resulting in substantial financial losses for X[1]. GARM, which includes major corporations like McDonald’s and Nike, announced its cessation of operations on Thursday but intends to contest Musk’s lawsuit in court[1].

Legal experts have weighed in on the lawsuit, with a former FTC official describing it as a “hideous joke”[2]. Despite this criticism, X Corp. has pressed forward with its legal action against several major companies, including CVS Health, Mars Inc., and Unilever, in a Texas federal court[3].

In this legal battle, Dhillon’s firm is collaborating with the S|L Law Firm from the Dallas suburbs. The lawsuit lists Dhillon, who has experience at four major law firms, along with her colleagues Christopher Mann, Andrew Renner, and Michael Shaw as X’s representatives[1].

Mann joined Dhillon’s firm from Troutman Pepper, where he was a partner. Renner, formerly co-chair of antitrust at Jenner & Block, came on board in June. Shaw, previously a partner at Boies Schiller Flexner and Susman Godfrey, joined in 2022[1].

This marks the first instance of Dhillon’s firm representing Musk-related entities in U.S. federal court, according to Bloomberg data. However, Renner had previously advised SolarCity Corp., later acquired by Tesla, in an antitrust matter while at Boies Schiller[1].

Dhillon and David Warrington, another partner at her firm who is also serving as general counsel to Trump’s campaign, did not respond to requests for comments. Similarly, James Myles, senior counsel and head of litigation at X, provided no comment[1].

The collaboration between Musk and Trump through this shared legal representation adds a new dimension to their increasingly public alliance, potentially influencing both the tech and political landscapes. As this story continues to develop, it remains to be seen how this legal partnership will impact their respective endeavors and the broader political and business environments.
